Level 3 Sports massage therapist
BA (Hons) Exercise Science
Studying MSc Performing Arts Medicine
My name is Emma Hayes, I am 23 years old and I have recently graduated from Nottingham Trent University with BA (Hons) Exercise Science (2018-2021) and I am now studying Performing Arts Medicine (MSc) at University College London (2021-2022). In my second year of university I took my level 3 sports massage qualification and I have been qualified since March 2020. I set up my own business in September 2020 and I work with a wide range of clients including football coaches, dancers, generally active individuals, as well as those who have office-based jobs. I also work with regular clients who have specific conditions such as fibromyalgia. In late 2020 I was looking at how I could improve my services for the new year and for the reopening after coronavirus restrictions, so I decided to take cupping and kinesiology taping courses, as well as a facials course to provide my spa experience appointments.
During the coronavirus restrictions shortly after I qualified, me and my family decided to convert our garage into my massage room which I also use for barre fitness private lessons. This also allowed me to put my skills to practice, learning as much as I could and experimenting with different massage techniques before opening up and taking bookings for new clients.
In addition to running my massage business from home, I occasionally travel to work at marathon events. The events I have worked at so far are Ultra Challenge events which are 25km, 50km, or 100km distances over 1 or 2 days. I have travelled to the Peak District, Lake District, Cotswold Way and Dawlish (South West Coast to Coast challenge). At these events I get to work alongside other sports massage therapists and physiotherapists – taking part in these events has really helped to grow my knowledge on different massage techniques, and has also helped to build my client base. I now have a lot more experience of working with runners, as well as understanding and treating any injuries or concerns they may have.
In addition to massage, I also teach private and group barre fitness classes. I took my Barre Fitness qualification in July 2020 in London by Stott Pilates. Since I attended university in 2018 I have always wanted to teach my own exercise classes. I took my gym instructor course and helped out assisting dance and gym classes whilst in University. These classes are unique to the local area and they also incorporate my background and interest of dance. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old and I studied at Jelli Studios Theatre Arts College in Liverpool (2016-2018). Over the years I have taken part in many dance shows, events and competitions, the main ones being Move It Performing Arts Event in London, English Youth Ballet, and Dance World Cup in Germany and Barcelona where I returned back home a world champion with my team. Teaching these classes allow me to focus on dance conditioning and technique, as well as making it a fun workout for total beginners. I set up my barre fitness classes in July and it is something I love to do and would love to carry on doing alongside my massage appointments.
